Can I change a 2-prong outlet to a 3-prong outlet?
You cannot install a three prong outlet where a two prong outlet exists. This is not permitted by NEC (National Electrical Code) Standards. Proper installation would consist of running new wiring to each receptacle equipped with a grounding wire ensuring the safety of your device, equipment, and home.
The Importance of Grounding
Grounding protects you from current that has faulted into uninsulated metal parts of an electrical device. Without grounding, serious electrical shock could occur.
Tamper resistant receptacles
Tamper resistant receptacles are required by the 2008 NEC (National Electrical Code). These receptacles have spring loaded shutters that close off the openings or slots of a receptacle. They protect children from entering objects into the receptacle; therefore, preventing electrical shock. Only when both slots are applied with pressure, such as plugging in a device, the shutters will open.
